Alex Winter Irving (nee Ryan) (2006 - 2008)

Alex Winter Irving has worked in marketing and communications most recently at Allianz and remains active within the St John's College community serving as Chair of the Student Relations Committee.

Hailing from the small town of Moruya on the NSW south coast, I always aspired to study at Sydney Uni as my dad had done a few decades earlier.  While at John's, I completed a Bachelor of Education (Human Movement and Health Education) as I was always passionate about teaching, sport and physical education but after a mid-degree gap year in Galway, Ireland, I had slightly amended these career ambitions. Returning from Ireland, I completed my teaching degree but immediately enrolled in a business degree at UTS.

While completing my business degree, I also worked full time for the NSW Lawn Bowls Association as their Marketing and Digital Manager.  In this role, I was fortunate to work for a fantastic CEO who had followed a similar path to mine and as a mentor she really encouraged me to pursue further study and continue to develop my professional and leadership skills.

After completing my business degree (and my boss moving on), I took a role in marketing and communications at Allianz. It’s at Allianz that I feel that I have really been able to accelerate my personal growth and development with the support of some phenomenal leaders. In my eight years at the company (so far), I have been promoted internally multiple times, commenced and completed an MBA, become a founding member on our gender equity committee and have most recently been leading an international team to deliver the first part of Allianz Australia’s global transformation program.

My relationship with the Home of Joy and Bliss has also continued throughout the years, initially through the Association, attending annual dinners and Christmas functions, then more formally in 2017 commencing on the Foundation Board, and 2019, I was honoured to be voted onto the College Council by the alumni and currently serve as Chair of the Student Relations Committee. While I am on parental leave from my full time job, it feels fantastic to be able to continue to give back to the community of John's that really gave me a springboard into life in Sydney.
